Sorting billions upon billions of Magic cards seems to be life so far. Could be worse; could be yugioh.

The Midnight Release is CANCELLED

Due to the snowfall, the main shipment of Mirrodin Besieged has been delayed in Chicago since Tuesday. It may be here Friday (best case) or next Monday, which would really suck.

I have smaller orders coming in tomorrow and expect to be able to have enough for the pre-ordered boxes as well as for the release events.

I will not have enough to open boxes for singles unless the main shipment arrives on Friday. Otherwise singles wont be available until Monday evening.

Gamma World Review by David Thiel

Gamma World is one of the oldest paper-and-pencil role-playing games, first published in 1978 during the ascendancy of Dungeons & Dragons. Detailing a loony, post-apocalyptic future of mutant badgers and excessively dangerous weapons, Gamma World was the radioactive country cousin of D&D.

There have been half a dozen editions over the years, and now comes number seven: a slick boxed set marketed as D&D Gamma World and based on the current version of the Dungeons & Dragons rules set.

The old-school nuclear Armageddon has been replaced by a 21st Century disaster. In the new backstory, our world ends in 2012 when the Large Hadron Collider causes dozens of parallel universes to collapse in upon each other, creating a combined reality. But there are still mutant badgers.

What's in the Box: A 160-page rulebook that covers character creation, combat, monsters, tips for game masters and a sample adventure. Two double-sided battle maps. Two sheets of character and creature tokens. Character sheets. A deck of 80 Alpha Mutation and Omega Tech cards, plus an 8-card booster pack.

First Impressions: At its core, this is a stripped-down version of 4th Edition D&D. That's not a criticism, merely an observation. As a fan of 4E, I'm happy to see that--a few notable changes aside--I can pretty much jump in and play.

Character creation is intentionally quick. As heroes max out at 10th Level (as opposed to D&D's thirty levels), it's clear that you're not intended to enjoy a long, happy career. No magical healing + notoriously undependable future technology = rolling up a new mutant. Fortunately, the character sheet walks you right through the process.

There are no feats in the trim rules set, and skills have been reduced to a mere ten. (One of which is "Conspiracy.") There are no action points or healing surges.

Races and classes are replaced by "origins": everything from Android to Yeti. Each character gets two, randomly-determined origins. While some of the options seem very specific--Rat Swarm, for instance--the game encourages creativity in the way they combine. (One given example is a Seismic/Hawkoid re-skinned into a gargoyle.)

One controversial aspect of this edition of Gamma World is the introduction of collectible cards. In addition to the powers granted by their origins, characters draw from a deck of Alpha Mutation cards that represent temporary abilities. Similarly, loot comes in the form of Omega Tech cards that describe futuristic hardware. While the Mutations are replaced after each encounter, Tech cards can potentially carry over...assuming that they don't break, run out of ammo or explode. Skillful characters can salvage broken Tech into permanent gear.

The components are excellent; there's a lot of value in the box. The token sheets are made of heavy cardboard and punch out easily. I'm not a big fan of chits in tabletop role-playing games, but given the unlikelihood of Gamma World-specific miniatures being produced, it's nice to see that every one of the 25 monsters detailed in the core rulebook is represented by multiple tokens.

The Final Word: I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but this new version of Gamma World looks like a good time. The rules are loosey-goosey and the emphasis is on random wackiness. It should be a fun change of pace from your weekly dungeon crawl.

Hi!

This Saturday we are doing the World-Wide Game day for the new Gamma World editon. Starting at

1pm, each participant will recieve two packs of GW boosters to use in the session at no charge.

the 31st of October, starting at 1pm, will be the Scars of Mirrodin World Wide Game Day. Format is

Constructed Standard, and no charge for entry. We'll do two tournament, having space and promo

cards for 60 people total. Dont forget you can faction your deck by haing at least 10 faction cards in

the deck. The two highest placing faction decks for each faction will recieve a faction-specific promo.

On 20 Nov, we are doing a Silent Auction/Flea Market here at the store from 1pm to 8pm. More details

as I work them out.

David Thiel wrote a review of the New Gamma world, check it out. It will be on the blog and the FB

page later tonight.

Deathwatch is out and it looks pretty cool. Course, space marine character armored is about 2.1

meters in height, no stealth expected.

The new starter boxes for Warmachine are out as well.

HI!

Back at it again, as you can see. We've celebrated the store's 10th anniversary a couple of weeks ago, so that was pretty exciting. What to do

what to do.

Games Workshop is coming out with the 8th Edition for Warhammer Fantasy Battles, at a stunning 74.50$ its a very large book and i've

heard rumors that there actually some rules in it. Anyway, paid pre-orders take 30% off.

Magic the Gathering as really picked up here, with 6-12 drafting on Thursday, 18-24 on Friday for FNM, and 6-10 on Saturdays for a prize

pack draft. All of these start at 6pm.
Starting in July Advanced Level stores can start scheduling two FNM tournaments each Friday, with 4 FNM cards for each Tournament. Here

we award 1st with a card, then randomly award the other three.

We've started doing D&D encounters on wednesday, starting with the new Dark Sun realms. That's at 6pm.

My warmachine army was burned to a scrisp inits first outing, leaving the two 'jacks orphaned, Im hoping for better results next time. The

goblin army, chaos, and romans are slowing being worked on. I hoping for motivation to strike sometime.

Starting this monday, The Dragon's Table will be holding a raffle, no purchase necessary, for a 4 day GenCon pass. You may come in and

get 1 ticket per day. On Aug 1st we'll hold the drawing. If the results warrant, I'll probably add some other prizes as well.

We have the "Stash" promo cards for Dominion, also promotional cards for the MTG Archenemy decks, and for the Duel of the

Plainswalkers PC game.

Hi!

Crazy busy weekend is here. Last night was the normal thursday night booster draft, tonight is the

Friday Night Magic and then tomorrow is The WorldWake Pre-Release Event! Not enuff hours in the day

for this.

At 1:30pm on Friday the Winter War customers are coming in already, yay!

The plastic on the windows help, and the lovely frost designs on the INSIDE of the glass adds some

oldworld charm....heh. People have remarked how nice the store looks when the snow is piled up and

around the windows.

The new Star Wars mini's are out, The Dark Times. They're taking the characters out of the comic book of

the same name.

Im ready for the winter weather to stop. Actually i was ready the first time it snowed.

The mordheim campaign is restarting on Monday, we had too many fatal errors in the first set of

warbands.

The budget this week was eaten by the order of Worldwake for the Pre-release tomorrow and next weeks

budget, beyond special orders, will be completely devoured by the WorldWake release order. Sigh.

And if anyone is interested, the Parkland Anime Club will be meeting in here tomorrow around 7:30pm.

Report for 20 Jan 2010

Hi!

Yay, the Tyranids are out, and I finally got the codexs in. The models had showed up here like they shouldve on Friday, but the books and codexs i had ordered were nowhere to be found. Turns out that the books had been shipped to Orchard Blossom, MS. Heh, you didnt know I had another store there, didya? Actually, I dont, at least not there :). Anyway, got GW on the phone Monday and they shipped another batch out.

The new plastic heavy jacks for WarMachine came in today. By the time you see this i should be well underway in putting my first Khador warjack together! And the new decks are in. A card for every warmachine jack, solo and unit made before 1 Jan 2010.

Got the pre-release promos and supplies in yesterday. So that's still on track. 30 Jan at 5:30pm. Thats a saturday, btw. My judge has informed me that he's only a Level II judge, but other than that it's fine.

If you've ordered something and i havent called you, please give me a call. Somehow my special order list was half-deleted or half-saved; I blame the cat.

Hi!

Finding out that 5' by 7' single layer sheets of glass do not retain heat very well. I was

expecting it, but reality bites. The landlord decided that a 5ton heating system was too

expensive so he had a 4ton put in. He was told it wasnt enough, but I guess he decided that

he wasnt actually going to be the one paying the heating bill. Sigh. Going to be putting

plastic on the windows this week.

Getting set for the MTG WorldWake Pre-Release. That should be fun.

Goblins are getting closer to being down, and I've primed my Lord of the Rings Wood Elves.

I love one piece figures!

Warmachine MK II is out, so now i can start deciding on my Khador army. Definately going

to have the Jack with the grenades and the shieldy arms in it.

Inventory is done and we added some more shelves to hold terrain.

MTG WorldWake Pre-Release

Hi!

It's going to be our first Pre-Release event! Jan 30th at 5:30pm on Saturday.

$25 entry, and it will be Sealed Format.

They sending me the promo cards as well as 2 or 3 booster boxes to use as prizes.

We'll have a Level III judge here as well.

I found out that Winter War was that Weekend after the Pre-Release was scheduled. And I have to run it on Saturday, no choice there, so we're doing it later in the afternoon so we can minimize conflicting with the convention.

Hi!

Last night i had a scare: it looked like a trojan virus got into the system that i use for POS and inventory and was denying me entry.

Oh, great.... called some people and tried a system restore...nothing was working. finally at 3am i go home. Coming into work, the

computer was fine, no sign of a virus even after several scans. ??

Friday Night Magic starts here tomorrow, Dec 4th. Format will be arranged by the players.

We are scheduled to hold the MTG Worldwake Pre-Release here. Details are being discussed and offered since i've never held a

pre-release before, and the only one I attended I went as a dealer.

The Mordheim campaign is going along fine, 2-3 games every monday night. My goblins have been lost in the deep woods around

Mordheim, so I havent been able to find the city again for the last few weeks. Still converting my second fanatic to a two-handed

weapon: oi, i hate converting figs.

This saturday has a 40K apocalypse game scheduled. 5000 pts again, but if you have less feel free to come in anyway.

We will be closed Christmas Day, and closed Jan 1st thru the 5th for inventory.

We are going to do the END OF YEAR Clearance Sale; its Dec 26th thru Dec 31st. The Dragon's Table needs to clear stuff out! Less

Hi!

Two weeks ago I took a vacation, combining the sword fighting with camping, and 5 days away from the store. I very nearly froze to death. Camping in sub-zero weather in a non-rated tent is not good planning, nor was it very much fun. Activities there were fun, but dealing with the weather was not. Happy to be back at the store. \

Tomorrow will be seven weeks with no soda.....

Everyone is getting wound up over HeroClix coming back out, and they're already reporting that they are sold out at the manufacturers level.

ATTTENTION!! the large parking lot behind(north) Kuhn's Dept Store and the High Dive is FREE PARKING after 5pm Monday thru Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday!!!

Finally got the 2nd expansion for Race for the Galaxy in, and another expansion for Dominion.

The magic players have decided that they want to do Booster Drafts on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays at 6pm. I've starting scheduling these next week. Also, there is the option to add $5 into the draft fee as extra prize support for the top three places. All of the cash will leave the store with the top three; its not store credit, and I wont be keeping any of it.

Going to start running various game demos on various nights, keep an eye on the schedule. If anyone wants to run a demo let me know, I'll be happy to schedule it.

Free Magic Draft at The Dragon's Table

Free Magic Draft. Twelve (12) places available. Pre-reg required, either on-line or in person. At 6pm we will seat the players that have signed up and present. At 6:15pm we will seat alternates. At 6:30 we start. No one will be seated after we start.

Hi!

Zendikar Magic set came out today and thats where the budget went. As of this writing i have a half of booster box left. Thank you Wizards of the Coast for yet another surprise regarding the vintage cards in 1 out of 750 packs. For the first time ever I've been selling boxes cheaper than the internet. Which is fine, cause thats the price I'd sell them, vintage or not.

Tomorrow we're doing an escalation 40K Tournament. Starting out at 750 pts, second round 1000pts and final round 1500pts. Tournament starts at 2pm.

Not a lot, starting to spend more time painting figures than i am play online. The painting is starting to have a harder pull than the MMO's. Who'da thunk? The Goblins of the Dragon's Table Mountains are slowly gathering, a waaagh isnt too far off.

The Space Wolves are back! and go on sale Tomorrow. Flipped through the codex; one orc player is already crying.....

The Mordheim warbands are gathering as well.

they are running. I'm not sure this is a good idea, as they call for such to enforce rules without bias. Heh.

Hi!

Been awhile, I admit, sorry about that. Anyway, been in the new place for 5 months and 2 days..... Looks like the windows are finall sealed against the torrential rains we've been getting, and they caulked the Historic Limestone sidewalk a couple of weeks aga, and it seems to be keeping out most of the rain in the basement.

This time we''re in a bigger space, and don't really need to shuffle tables around for different things.

Who: Anyone with a 1000pt W40K

If you are planning to participate please email Adam Joseph at
ajoseph3@uni.illinois.edu by Monday May 18th. I will then determine teams
and email you and post them at the Dragons Table. Teams will be random,
but I will inform you before the tournament so you can plan. Each person
will bring a 1000pt force, coordinated with your partner. Each TEAM, not
person, much fulfill the requirements of the force organization chart. all
other unit requirements apply

Hi!

It's been about 7 weeks in the new space, and other than the leaking front windows, I'm starting to like it. I

have the feeling that the windows will be a problem for some time to come, because i cant see the leaks

stopping unless the windows are replaced...;..... that'll be fun.

This saturday is the CITW Game Day at the Dragon's Table. Doors open at 8am and the games start around

9am. A break for lunch and then more gaming in the afternoon. Entry and gaming is free. This is a good

chance to try different games. There's a 54mm ACW skirmish being run which is what im told is a huge

amount of fun.

The 6th of June is not only the anniversary of DDay, but the start of The Dragon's Table 9th year in business!

While that can't compare to the major event of WWII, it's pretty significant to me. Our anniversary will have

free pop and pizza from 1-4pm, 25% off everything in the store, a sidewalk sale (if not raining) and dancing in

the streets! Er, maybe not dancing anyway.

Demos are scheduled during the day: so far a 3hour Warhammer FantasyRPG session at 1pm, and a

Desperado game running for the afternoon. Desperado's cool, cause you can enter anytime.

I had a request for the Euro size card sleeves, and i have got some in the store as of today. The thicker ones

are on pre-order so we're waiting on that.

If someone lives in Urbana and mows yards, lemme know. Mine needs a trimming.

Tuesday nights have evolved to magic draft/open play night. Drafts are $12, and we use the backdraft format

here.

In July we're going to start friday night magic, with the cards and all. Yay! Hopefully wizards doesnt change

their program soon, it's hard to keep up sometimes.

I've started playing WoW again, sigh. I'm Khelson, Orc Warrior, on Shadowsong.

First Monday in June we'll start a new Warhammer league. I need to get some more tables. We're getting a

large turnout for 40K and Fantasy, usually 8-12 players most nights. Remember, we dont charge for tables

here or memberships. We do require shoes, though. Sorry.

In case anyone noticed Saturday and Sunday, anyone who tried to call The Dragon's Table got a disconnected message. AT&T strikes again. Last Thursday night my internet was cut by the phone company, when i called in about it on Friday I was told there had been a work order to cut it. Asked why, no one knew why there was a work order in the first place. Ooops our mistake, but gosh, itll take three business days to turn the internet back on. After many phone calls, I got them to say it would be back on Monday.

When i got back from sword fighting, there was a message waiting saying my new phone number was active. They turned off the number i've had for over 8 years and gave me a new one, and since the business office is closed on the weekends I had no phone. Only me, God and AT&T knew the new number. Thanks so much.

I was in the store at 6am monday morning to be sure i was calling the business office at 7am when it opened. 90 minutes later i had the original store number turned on but was still getting the run around about the internet. Finally I got a call saying that it would be on by 5pm. It wasnt, and the business office closes at 5pm.

Today, tuesday, I started the monkeygoround at 10am, and was told that the service was on. By 3pm we had established that no, it wasnt on, and I'm switching to Sprint if I dont have internet by the time i go home tonight. Finally, i got transferred to the secret Tier2 level of Tech support.
It took over an hour, but he finally got it up and running by 4:30.

Moral of the story? Utilities are impossible to bring to account; so it takes patience patience patience and a refusal to accept "not my department, we have procedures, and let me transfer you to someone who can help....."

The city made them rewire the basement and replace the light fixtures that had bulbs hanging down. that took the rest of yesterday which made the whole inspection delayed.
Supposedly they're staining/sealing the back floor tomorrow morning. This was decided as the best answer to much heated debate. Not the best decision, but the only one they'll pay for.
So monday at 2pm when the inspection is. We'll see after that.

Hi!
Not a lot of stuff this week, mostly special orders. I'm reluctant to do a lot of restocks until i get to the new space; less to carry.
Painting is done, they're doing touchup and finishing work there now. The electrician is coming in Tuesday to run the conduits on the ceiling for the lights. Then i can get them up. The carpet is gonna be installed next wednesday. Bathroom and the back floor is left after that. I have no idea what the owner wants to do with the back floor, i may end up having to go back to my original plan of sanding then sealing. Oh yeah, and never never rent from an alien again.
We will probably have a re-opening party, just dont know when yet.
We have a 28mm WWII demo game scheduled for the 20th at 4pm. He's using the "NUTS" rulesystem and has enough figs for up to 4 people at a time.
I've just opened an account with the warstore. So anyone that wants victrix, wargames factory or plastic or even the perry brothers, i can get it. yay!
Had a customer likened our current temp spot as a dungeon, but i told him that without the obligatory small barred window high up, not really.
Several people looking for a WOW miniature tournament. Scheduled it for 1st march. See how that goes.
I have some people looking for D&D 3.5 core rule books. Anyone not using them, trade em in!
I have magazines for Tom and Phil, and actually know where they are..... at least at this moment.

Hi!

Work proceeds at the new location. The furnance on the ceiling is working and its pretty quiet, so we'll see

how long that lasts.... They are installing the insulation for the walls now, waiting for a city inspector to show up

and make sure they're doing it right. Heh.

The temporary space still has no windows, but it's no longer as cold as it was. So that's to the good. I do have

4 tables up, it's a little cramped, but shouldn't be for much longer.

Next week the new magic set comes out. The Street Date is 6 Feb, Friday, so we'll be able to have the

midnite sale Thursday nite as usual. I didnt schedule anything with Wizards because I'm not sure where we'll

be. So for now, assume that we'll be in our temp location still.

New Store 23 Jan 09

Well, its been a month since i signed the lease, and we're still not in the new store. sigh. They have been working very quickly since the building permit was issued. so that's good.

Today the plumber hooked up the gas to the furnace and has started in on the restroom. Standing inside what was supposed to be the furnace room, i think i can stack the shelves a bit higher and not have to have the extra product out in the gaming area.

Plus we'll have a mop basin in the no-longer-furnace-room-but-now-a-storage-room. yay!.

Ok, we are in the temp location, all squeezed in. Starting to feel a bit anxious, since im not used to working in a windowless place. Don't like it.

Ceiling has the drywall up and they were building the frame around the side and back walls. Frame for the bathroom is up, as is the frame for the heating/AC......except that they are hanging the furnace and the AC from the frikkin ceiling!

I'm kinda curious about the thinking that was involved in that. The installers werent any help. They just said thats the way the plans called for. So it looks like i have a storage room after all.

Tomorrow should be fun. I'm asking for a bid on my dividing wall and also seeing what color the ceiling and walls will be painted. I'd like offwhite for the ceiling and maybe light green or brown for the walls?

I should be putting new video tomorrow.

Temp Location

Starting Thursday nite and continuing thru sunday, we will be packing up the Dragon's Table and moving down the hall to Suite #103.

We'll remain open during the move, so please feel free to come and play, buy or even help pack/move.

We'll be sharing the space with GMart Comics, so it'll be pretty squeezed in, with a good chunk of product being left in packing boxes. I'm expecting we'll be in the temp location for 3-4 weeks.

I'm hoping to have room for 5-6 tables for gaming while there. It's going to be cramped, but the new space will seem like a wide limitless horizon after this.....

After explaining to the building code people that batwing saloon doors dont have latches, and hence no need for a latch safety release, we got the building permit about 2pm today.

Tomorrow they start putting the drywalll on the ceiling, and the other construction types start their work as well.

YAY!

We're still open, sadly, at the original address 44 E Main. I had fully hoped when i signed the lease that this wouldve been opening day in the new location, but alas, not with the city so strictly concerned about the safety of their citizens. I'm amazed that anything actually gets built in this town.

Hi!

Piece of advice to would be renters of properties: don't sign nuthin unless it's ready to move into AT THAT MOMENT!

With the renovation being done at the new store site, the city is feeling its responsibilities very keenly. Everytime the paperwork is brought

into the permit office (dunno what to call it) something else needs to be done. It would be fine if they handed you a list and said "do this and

if its not on the list we dont care", but when they do it one item at a time, you have to call shennanigans. I've come to the realization that my

present and future landlord IS NOT the city's fave landowner.

So its possible we will be moving into temporary quarters in a couple of weeks, or into the nearly finished new space. Dunno. Sigh, at least

in the temp location, it'll be rent free.....and costing the landlord any rent until this is dealt with. I can live with that, and the temp spaces are

smaller, so that'll be fun.

Instead of the beat up wood floor, the landlord wants to preserve it and so is thinking about putting another floor over it and covering that. I

said carpet would not be good, tile is better. We'll see how that goes. Also, instead of brick and plaster, it looks like the 3 walls are going to

be framed, insulated and drywalled. Which will be much better for insulation and overall look of the place. Since that's that what landlord

wants, he's paying for it. Yep, got my vote.

Building is completely cleaned out, took nearly 4 of the big 20ft dumpsters to do that. I really underestimated the time it would take.

Learning, sigh, never stops.

Xmas sales were great, end of the year sales were great, inventory was not fun as usuall, so i guess if its the same that would make it

great? After 7 years we're getting the inventory down pretty smooth. Next year i may not dread it so much.

Got a Warhammer 40k Tournament this saturday, at 1pm. 1500pts.

Started a new 40K league this tuesday. The last one we handed out $85 in prizes.

Hopefully the new store will be ready for the next magic pre-release. We're working on that now.

New Store 31 Dec afternoon

Hi!

Ceiling is finally cleaned of nails and loose debris, and finally got the dumpster emptied and returned. So we could put the rest of the ceilig and such into it. I really underestimated the amount of time it would take to peel the ceiling, and how fast it would fill a 20 foot dumpster.

As you can see we've gooten the wainscotting moved downstairs where it will sit for all of eternity with luck. Up in the fron of the store we discovered a door hidden behind the nasty wallpaper. that's going to be completely sealed off with no trace of its existence. Also we uncovered a second back door, which is also going to be sealed and covered up.

I was going to remove the old plaster and learn-as-i-go re-plaster the north wall, but i learned at Lowe's that the under-plaster (its the gray cementy looking stuff) has to be removed completely or its just falls off with the new plaster. And since the bricks are over 100 years old, it was decided that taking a hammer to know it off would probably a lot of the bricks. So, the back and north wall are going to be framed, insulated and dry-walled. Which also is going to add to the time.

I'd ordered the drywall from CU Drywall for delivery last friday. With the Ice and all, they said it would get delivered monday. It didnt show up monday and the time requested, so i started calling. No one answered the phone all day. When i got a hold of them Tuesday, the response was" what? I thought that was taken care of? Let me look into it." 3 hours later, i called them back, canceled the order, and ordered it from Negwer Materials. Paid for it and they brought it out this morning.

The drywall was delivered this morning, at freaking 7am! It was cold, and its been a looong time since i had to be up at 7am.... But it was pretty cool how they took it off the truck and into the building.

Now we're waiting on the building permit, and have been for a week. The city keeps sending the application back with more questions. I really don't understand how construction people keep their sanity.

It looks like we'll be reopening in our original location on the 6th of January. Hopefully a week after that we'll start the move.

New Store Saturday Morning

Hi!

It's at the point where a new and empty dumpster is required. To roll the scaffolding to finish pulling out the nails and scraps of plaster and lathe from the edges of the ceiling, a reasonably empty floor is needed. No room in the dumpster means we can't finish that. Today and tomorrow will be finishing what can be reached.

New Store 3rd Morning

Hi!

Wednesday afternoon and Christmas Day was mostly getting the rubble from the ceiling out to the dumpster. The dumpster is almost full. The scaffolding and heaters we got from Rental City here in town.
Pretty quick to deliver and easy to deal with.

Today the drywall is supposed to be delivered, but got a call saying that the truck is stuck with the ice covering their parking lot making getting the truck moving in the intended direction nearly impossible . So they're working on that, which works out for us, giving us a little more time to get the floor ready to storethe drywall.

The south wall needs replastering so we'll prob start that saturday or sunday, and the north wall needs some repairs and maybe some replastering as well.

The new store address is 205 north market. Its the first building behind 44 E Mainstreet. Its on the same block. North market is a one way street, and its also the street the newspaper delivery guys line up on to get their papers.

Parking is the same as before, just a little farther away now.

If we open by 8 Jan I will be very happy, but it may be a little later. we'll keep the updates on the Board, the blog and the website.

Week of Dec 11

Hi!

Here I am again. Can't speak for the others, but I'm feeling better.

Yes, the Dragon's Table is moving, so is GMart. This was not by our choice, but

rather the landlord found someone who will pay triple our current rent and

renovate the space. Appearently, the time is ripe for a new eyeglass shop in

downtown champaign.

The current possible location is 205 N Market street, the old Graphics Press

building. And old it is. Theres a lot of work that needs to be done before im

willing to move in, and the landlord insists that i pay for the remodeling, which is

basically new walls, ceiling and some other stuff.

We're in negotiating phase with the landlord, which is kinda like talking to the

entire cast of Third Rock from the Sun :). It's very tiring.

So at the moment we have no idea whn the work will be done, and when the

actual move will be.

I'll be putting up a video record of the work being in the new place from start to

finish, should prove amusing.....

There's a Monsterpocalypse Tournament scheduled this Sunday at 1pm, come

on by. Play in the tourney or we can teach the game. It's all free.

Just got an email from Games Workshop. Not gonna be happy about this. It's going to be a massive price increase

all across the board. Mostly the metal figs, books, and paints. It goes into effect on September 29th. As usual, the

price increase takes effect here as I order to restock; won't be no running around changing the prices of the stock

Hi!

The reprint for Dark Heresy is out, but be ready for the sticker shock: $59.95! Now we know why GW and Sabertooth games handed off the licenses: MORE MONEY and no work.

The 'Ardboyz tournament in september is limited in size. At most i can have 14 people on 7 sets of tables playing. So thats my limit. The annoying thing is that i've bought the kits they have for that and there's only 10 tshirts in the kits. GW said that stores can sell the tshirts; i said we dont charge for tournaments or promotional items. Asked about for 4 more tshirts. they said buy another kit. sigh.

I did open another box of Eventide, so the singles are refilled. Poor Noggles.

Parking downtown is 75cents an hour from 8am to 9pm Monday thru Friday. Also, pay once after 5pm and stay till 3am. (um, for us, that means 10pm:) City council, what can i say?

Hi!

We're hosting the 40K 'Ardboyz Tournament here on Sept 13, 2008. This is the first of a three round tournament , held

one round a month, ending in Baltimore in November. I don't know where the second round will be; I'll find out soon I

hope. This will be a 2500 point tournament.

I'm taking preorders for the Assault on Black Reach: 10% for preorders, 30%off is prepaid. Paying in advance would

make it $45.26. Already it looks like the UPS guy is going to be unhappy. $300 of mini's for $45.26! Wow, little too

much like a TV ad.

The D&D 4.0 DM Screen is supposed to be out Aug 18th. Let's hope they can keep to the schedule.

The new Dark elf plastic boxes are out, and the black ark corsairs look really good, and the cover art for the codex is

great. I want a poster size of that one.

I sent the order To Battlefront for June and July's new releases as well as some special orders. They should be in next

week.

After GenCon, they'll open the supply again and the new stuff will show up on a more regular basis.

I opened another box of Eventide for singles; since the previous singles have been savaged.......

The Dragon's Table 13 June 2008

Hi!

Saturday, the 7th of June was The Dragon's Table 7th Anniversary party. Thanks for the 7 years, and I appreciate the good

luck wishes for the next year!

The Worldwide D&D Game was a big hit. We ended up running all five sessions on saturday, which is a first for us, usally

we only get enough people to run 1 or 2 scenarios. Everyone had fun with it, tho a few decided they didn't like the rules.

Still have DMG's and MM's for D&D 4.0 in stock, more PHB's will be in tomorrow. So far I've sold about 22 each DMG/MM

and 40 PHB's since Friday! This is selling much better than 3.0/3.5 ever did!

A week after this Saturday, on the 21st, doing another 40K Apocalypse game, once again pushing all the tables together

for a monster game!

Another week has gone by, and there's still snow swirling about; wonder if they need a gamestore in New

Mexico or Arizona....not desperate enough from the cold to move to Texas.....

Fields of Glory has made it to the shop. If someone can do a review that would be great.

This saturday is a W40K tournament and Sunday we're doing a WarMachine Tournament. No charge for

either and if we get 6 people I'll do some prize support.

Hi!

Well, another Winter War survived..,... I have the store pretty much put back together, the game room is still

pretty rough, but i should be finished by tomorrow evening.

The UFS CCG group has decided to move to the Dragon's Table, and are sponsoring a tournament this

saturday at 1pm. I'm sure demos are available as well. I've also ordered the two newest sets of UFS, and

with their release dates being this friday, I thought it would mesh well.

I also have a FOW of War tournament scheduled for this saturday as well, so it should be busy.

D&D products currently in stock are now 20% off, and will continue to be until 4E comes out in June of this

year.

DC Crisis HC are being released on 27 Feb; have you got yours ordered?

In March we are planning on doing a terrain building class. Hills will probably be the main theme, although

houses will also be included if I can prepare enough kits.

A reminder for those who got Dragon's Table prize certificates at Winter War this year or earlier: they dont

expire! Bring them to the store or to the next convention!

Hi!

Once more unto the breach. Next week is Winter War! Hawthorn Suites Hotel over by Hooters and SteaknShake. Friday Saturday and Sunday of Gaming Goodness! Don't come here; 'cause I'll be there!

We're closing at 7pm next thursday night on the 7th so we can pack up for WinterWar. Several of my helpers for this amazing feat have already warned me that they'll be exercising their tonnage veto, that is, trying to restrain me from bring the whole store to the show. We'll see....

A new Educational Toy Store Opened up in monticello recently. Its called Bee Active Toys and it's at 204 W Washington off the square. Phone is 217-762-4FUN. Tell him I sent you; kickback? heh, i wish.

The Warhammer 40k league is moving along. It's pulling in some people I havent seen for a while.

In Febuary I'm planning on starting a monthly Flames of War Tournament. First one will be 1000pts. Lets see what we can do with this....

Later this week or early next week, I'm expecting the large DBA order in. Also, a FOW order is expected late next week that will include the Feb 9th releases.

Zombies!!!: Game Review

Twilight Creations Presents - Zombies!!!

Zombies!!! is a tile-based game where you control a
human survivor of a zombie uprising. During the game
you run the streets of an everyday downtown area
ravaged by the undead. The goal is to be the first
survivor to reach the waiting helicopter and be
evacuated. The game box contains miniatures, city
street tiles, health and ammo counters as well as
actions cards to spice up play.

First, the game's positive points. The game board is
built randomly every turn as new city streets are
added, providing for variety of play in endless
possibilities for the city layout. Tile-based games
allow for players to avoid the tedium of play areas
that remain static. The game also has a simple combat
system that takes moments to master. Ultimately the
greatest part of Zombies!!! is the atmosphere. The
game succeeds and fails on dark humor and the sheer
joy of allowing players to run around the neighborhood
blasting the animated dead.

However, the game does have some issues that take away
from the overall enjoyment factor. The game rules are
brief (very brief), which is a plus, but it seems at
times that brevity was chosen in spite of the need for
detailed explanation. This issue is nowhere more
evident then when dealing with event cards in the game
and the inevitable confusion in their implementation.
In the end this problem is insignificant when looked
at as compared to the overall enjoyment the game
offers.

If you are looking for a perfect game, look somewhere
else. If you are looking for an outlet for twisted fun
with the undead, give Zombies!!! a try.

Tsuro: Game Review

Tsuro

Tsuro from Wizkids games is a big departure from their collectible strategic
games: a board/tile game easily approachable for nongamers. The game parts
consist of: a board with a 6x6 grid, with two "paths" on each segment of
grid perimeter; 35 "path" tiles, each with four paths with uniform
exit/entrance placement; a "dragon" tile, to determine who draws the first
tile, and mark who gets the next when you run out; and eight pawns.

The goal of the game is simple: stay on the play area. Play begins with the
oldest: play a tile so that your pawn has a new segment of path to follow,
then move your pawn to the current end of your path, then draw a tile.
Multiple pawns can be affected by a single tile, and all are moved to the
end of their path. If the paths of two players intersect, they are out. A
path going to the perimeter is also out. Ties are easily possible, even
three-way ties. I played a three person game where all of us were affected
by the next tile, and no matter the tiles' orientation, two paths
intersected, and the third left the board.

Tsuro is, simply put, a beautiful elegant game, perfect to play with any
number from 2 to 8. My experience says that the game does not lose enjoyment
with less players, as part of the fun is building attractive or complex
paths. The fun of the game is not in winning, but in seeing the paths
develop and followed.

Winter War is the weekend of the 8-10th of Feb this year at the Hawthorne Suites Hotel.

Had a good turnout at the 40k tournament last saturday and it was a good kick off for the

40K League as well. The league will run until Mar 31st of this year. Awards are for:

Most games won: $50.00 store credit
Most Games Played: $30.00 store credit
Most People Played: $20.00 store credit
Most Games Lost: $5.00 store credit and a raspberry

No scheduling required; come in and play. Any Tournaments at the Dragon Table will add

to your league points, plus the Tournaments at Winter War will also add to league points.

Hi!

Inventory is traumatic as usual. If that wasn't enough, we pulled the rug in the back room

up as well. Definitely makes it brighter back there.

Found many bags of shipping peanuts; didnt think i was saving that much. Anyway, if

anyone wants any come and get them_soon_since im going to start throwing them away

next week. I'd rather not throw them away, come and get 'em!

I'm expecting the new 40K Ork Codex in on Friday, along with new ork figures.

Got a surprise in the today's shipment: new product from Apophis Press. I'd thought

they vanished a few years ago when Obsidian went out of print.

Hi!

Need a new keyboard, this one has been dropped too many times so

now the spacebar sticks, such fun.

I managed to live thru my vacation the week before last, despite slicing

off a bit of a finger. It's fine, barely noticable and all that. And I still hate

camping.

Mighty Empires has finally made it to the store, and I'm looking for 3-4

people for a WHFantasy campaign with it, and I think its usuable for

Flames of War as well. WH40K not too sure; I guess we could try it and

see.

Warhammer 40K apocalypse is now in stock, and the huge and

monstrous firing templates, and the lovely dainty Baneblade. heh.

I have a D&D GM looking for 2 more adults for a 2nd ED campaign. Call

me and I'll pass the pnone number to you. Got something going on

this weekend he does.

I have the Fall League kit in for Warmachine. We'll be starting it next

wednesday.

November 3rd is the world wide D&D Day. Again, we'll have the D&D

Hi!

Here I am again, and not making any promises, will try to stick around and do this every week.

The Summer League for War Machine started wednesday, and I also ordered the summer kit yesterday as well. We're running the
League From Wednesday to Tuesday, plenty of time to schedule games. I have the phone numbers and emails of the participating

players available.

Pat Green has entered the University of Kansas for his Masters program. Let's wish him success on that. Pat's been a fixture at The

Dragon's Table nearly since the open back in June 2001. It is not going to be the same without him.

So now we're looking for Tournament organizers for WizKids games, preferably a person for each game.

With Ages End, the Lord of the Rings CCG from Decipher has ended, having I think 19 expansions.

There's been a sudden surge of interest and playing in the Rage CCG, the first version, not the nasty second. They are looking for

players and one of them has me looking for a Vladimir Foil from the Wyrm expansion.

The Dragon's Table is signed up for the 2007 Worldwide D&D Game Day on Nov 3rd. at 1pm we'll start running the adventures;

looking for two more GM for this.

The CITW will be meeting on Saturday 8th Sept at The Dragon's Table, opening the doors at 8am.

Is a wargames convention in the war zone in Iraq. Local gamers are buying game materials to send over to the soldiers for the con and othertimes. The Dragon's Table has donated a pile of product to this and many people have come in and bought stuff to send over. Anything bought for the troops is 10% off; now and later.

Tom Trumpinski is the main contact for this and he can be reached at 217-714-3634. The plan is to get everything gathered up so it can be shipped May 1st.

Just got notice that the Magic Tournament is now sanctioned; seems like 4 business days instead of the 1-2 that they said it takes.

FedEx delivered a huge stack of DCI membership cards today, I was a little worried about that,

Sanctioned Magic Events!

After more hoop-jumping than I can count or even fathom, I've finally got my Level 1 Tournament Organizer set up. So my first tournament is Friday, Mar 30, at 6pm. Unfortuantely,as far as I can see, its going to take a few months of running events before I can start getting actual prize support from WOC. It figures, like most game companies that "support" tournaments, they're constantly changing the programs to save themselves money and effort.

I'm still waiting for a reply to my email asking what's going on with this. It'll probably come back like the sealed empty 8th edition theme deck that I got: "if you didnt get it directly from us, it's not our problem."

The battle with the POS and Inventory programs finally ended yesterday at around 6pm. The ComCash Tech Support finally figured out what need to be done, and maneged to explain it to me so that I understood it.......

And that's why all this is so late.

Yes, I have Burning Crusade (the new World of Warcraft expansion) and yes it is installed, but i havent played it or any other WoW in over 13days. Sigh, too busy in the store.

New Items for the Week 10th Jan 2007

Hi!

First of al1, thanks for a great year! Well, actually 6 1/2 years!

My POS system crashed yesterday, but was able to get it reloaded and updated as well. No information was lost this time. But while talking with the vendor for the system, they mentioned that they now have a program for online sales that would interact seamlessly with my POS and Inventory systems.

This would mean the entire inventory of The Dragon's Table acessible online and could be bought online as well. It would take a while to get pictures of everything on the site tho :)

It's expensive, fortunately the money isnt the problem. I'm trying to decide if its worth the money, time and effort to do so. Do I really need to take The Dragon's Table online? With the online discounting of others, I don't see how it would be any advantage to me or the store.

Any opinions?

Im going to be setting the date for the Mad Munchkin Monarch Tournament again soon. I have to pick up the trophy and plaque from last year.

Winter War is coming: 9th-11th Feb. Don't forget. Ill remind you as you come into the store till then.

Opened on Saturday and it was a good day, extremely busy. The game room was full all day.

Trying to get the maps done for the campaigns done.

The only thing that i got this week was the 1910 Expansion for Ticket to Ride.

Long week, tiring week. Two days off werent enough.

Inventory, What a Pain

All the counting is nearly done, got a good amount of help from friends . Even handed two of them a hammer, nails, wood and a circular saw; now I no longer have a leaning bookshelf of manga!

Spent extra time in the Roleplaying books, and i think we got them all sorted out so all the product lines are shelved together.

I'm planning an collecting all the red-dot stuff and putting them into one set of shelves to make it easier to find.

Digging out and re-arranging the back room, I think it'll be good.

I still have Saturday the 6th as the re-opening date.

Review Arkham Horror

Arkham Horror

First, there are a lot of components in the box. Stacks of small cards,
stacks of big cards, six different types of counters, character sheets,
Ancient One sheets, gate tokens, character tokens, monster tokens. The first
thing you're going to do is split them out into snack-sized baggies, because
if you don't set-up is going to take even longer than normal.

The flavor text and feel of the game evokes 1920's Lovecraft horror very
effectively - you are investigators, trying to prevent some big bad menace
from coming to Arkham. This game has style. Between the cards and dice
rolls, there's enough randomness to make things interesting, but there's a
lot of odds calculations and choices to make it more than a "roll and move"
type of game.

The game is cooperative, where everyone is trying to meet a common goal.
There are rules to find out a winner/MVP, but those seem tacked on and not
in the spirit of the game. Some people really hate this, but our group isn't
among them. In that sense, it has the feel of a roleplaying game more than a
board game. You play characters with stats and equipment, each with
particular strengths and weaknesses. This works well. You may rock when it
comes to casting spells, but if a monster has magical resistance, you can
yell for your fellow players to come rescue you.

The rules are detailed and give you lots of options, but are laid out very
poorly. It will take a reading through to figure out how to play (or better
yet, get someone to teach you, or download a cheatsheet from
boardgamegeek.com). There are mythos cards that change the rules, tweaking
each game temporarily. Between the variations of the characters, the
big-bad, and the mythos cards, each game is different. Replayability is
high.

There are two expansions, which aren't needed but are nice. Without the
expansions, the location encounters are a bit repetitive. The game says it
is 3-8 players, but it best between 4-6 (again, the Dunwich Horror expansion
probably makes the 7-8 player game more playable). Plan on spending an
afternoon playing because a game can take a long time to play, especially
the first few times as you look up "how does that rule work again."

In short, this game gets suggested when we have the time and people to play.
This game isn't for everyone, but it is one of our favorites.

Review ANTIKE

ANTIKE

The board has nice, simple artwork. It is two-sided: East and West (although
game play doesn't seem to change much between the two sides). The cities on
the board are color-coded with what they produce, which is a plus. The
pieces are wooden and nicely sculpted. The chips are cardboard, heavy stock,
although the coins look out of place. There are four cheat sheets in English
and German. Why only four, when six people can play? Good question. Share or
photocopy.

This is billed as "Civilization for the casual gamer" which is a bit of a
misnomer. We finished our game in 3.5 hours, and that included learning the
game, then teaching it as a new player rotated in. We're guessing that once
all is said and done, a typical game would be under three hours. Turns fly
by - I was amazed at how often I thought "it's my turn already?" Unlike
Civilization, there isn't the huge math issue as you add up resources and
decide what advances you can afford. You don't need the seven or eight
people to play (yes, Civ does allow fewer players, but I don't think it
scales down well); the game seems to scale up and down nicely (although two
people is stretching it).

But, if anything, the game is less random than Civilization - no dice, no
cards. Resources are bought, and combat is handled like Civilization and
Diplomacy, where you can predict who is going to win before the battle
starts. Thinking and "looking ahead seven turns" is essential. The rondel
(one of the more interesting game mechanics) means if you don't do things in
the proper order, you have to wait a few turns, or pay extra resources.
There are multiple strategies to winning (beating up your neighbor isn't one
of them, because battle takes a lot of resources and the payoff isn't that
great). There's a lot of resource management (do I mine iron or marble this
turn, do I use coin to build a city or build troops, etc.). Diplomacy is
important, especially as you start meeting your neighbors and setting up
borders. It's a very "crunchy" game, with a lot of decisions.

Since I just got the game, I don't know about replayability. I can see the
game getting old after a while, if only because there are only a handful of
strategies that seem to really work. And the lack of randomness means you
can keep doing the same strategy over and over again; no lucky break is
going to open up, no horrible roll is going to prevent you from getting that
last iron. Each nation starts with the same resources, and no area looks
better than another. But, we still break out Civilization every so often,
and still enjoy it. I expect this to be the same. This is a solid strategic
game, if a bit too analytical.

Flames of War, Warhammer Fantasy &40K Campaigns

Starting around the middle of January, I'm planning to be hosting campaigns for the three game systems. Hoping to have 6-8 players per map of each, and if i have more i'll start another map.
Im ready to start signing up people for this now.....

The rules are almost done and i've been trying to work on a map for it. Since the map is going to be zone/block movement, the map details won't matter at all for game play.

All three campaigns will start out with a 500 point force, and will maneuver as that. If you win your battle, you will get half of your loss back before your next map move, and the other quarter a move later as well as a reinforcement bonus for winning. The losing side of that will not gain replacements and reinforcements so easily.

If you're interested, let me know.

Review Nexus Ops

Nexus Ops

I’m a fan of Hasbro’s Avalon Hill imprint, as I love light wargames with lots of crunchy bits. You can keep your cardboard chits, I want the visual thrill of lining tiny warriors across a world map.

Despite that, I ignored Nexus Ops when it was first released in 2005. The box artwork was unappealing, and the description obtuse. I was floored to discover that it’s a lot of fun, with a good dose of strategy to boot.

Players represent corporate interests vying for control of a mineral-rich planet, represented by a modular hex board with a “monolith” tower in the middle. The monolith grants its owner bonus cards which can boost the effectiveness of his/her troops.

Each corporation may hire weak human mercenaries, but can also enlist a variety of species better equipped for the world’s unusual landscape. Fungoids and Crystallines are similar in that each is stronger in their native terrain, and weaker if occupying the other’s home turf. Striders move two hexes as long as their path takes them over rocky ground. Leapers can jump if they begin on a lava hex. Dragons are expensive and have a plasma breath attack which can take out units on adjacent spaces. Certain creatures are restricted from entering lava, or from scaling the monolith.

Combat follows a strict battle order, with stronger units attacking first. Unlike many wargames, defeated units do not return fire if it’s not their turn in the initiative order. Players must make choices; using cheap cannon fodder as casualties means that these units will be unavailable later on. Sometimes it’s better to remove a costlier creature which has already attacked.

One easily overlooked aspect is that the game is won not by controlling mines or being King of the Monolith, but by collecting a set number of victory points. Each battle won by a player on his/her turn nets at least one VP; more if the player achieves the conditions set by their secret mission cards.

Nexus Ops is a solid strategy game with a lot of crunch for the dollar.

Star Wars Miniatures: Starship Battles

Starship Battles is Wizards of the Coast’s attempt to break away from the ground-based combat of their popular Star Wars Miniatures line. The result is a simple wargame in which Light Side and Dark Side fleets rush toward each other across an empty stellar grid map.

There’s nothing wrong with simple, but without terrain modifiers or the ability to “hide” weaker vessels, there’s little opportunity for tactical maneuvering. With the exception of the starfighter class, any ship can target any other ship on the map. Fortunately, the simplicity of the rules allows for easy modification if you want a greater challenge.

Four classes of ships include the massive war wagons of Class 1, both of which are included in the starter set. Class 2 features battleships such as the Imperial Star Destroyer. Medium-size cruisers—as well as famous vehicles such as the Millenium Falcon—make up Class 3, and Class 4 is exclusively starfighters such as the X-Wing. Ships move a number of spaces equal to their class, and only the larger craft need worry about their facing as they move.

The miniatures are the real draw, and Wizards has done an excellent job here. Virtually every significant starship from the movies is represented in the initial release, as are many from the tie-in novels, cartoons and video games. Collectors will appreciate the availability of ships not previously made as toys, such as the Separatist cruisers seen in the opening minutes of Revenge of the Sith. Sculpts and paint jobs are relatively detailed, and while many of the miniatures are made from a softer plastic, the only ships I’ve found to suffer from excessive warping are the standard TIE Fighters.

Starship Battles may be a light wargame, but as a long-time Star Wars fan, I can’t help but be pleased by the sight of so many familiar vessels locked in terrible combat.

I think that I would be interested in Game Reviews written by my customers. Since I hardly ever play, and no- WoW isnt completely at fault here, and a lot of things get bought here (thanks:)). Maybe i can get the customer who played a game to review it here. Say, 200-300 words for $5.00 store credit, limit of two reviews a month......
